Xinhua Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine was founded in 1958, which is the first comprehensive hospital designed and built by Shanghai itself since the founding of New China. Xinhua Hospital covers an area of 261 mu (including about 152 mu in Fengxian Hospital), with a total building area of 256000 square meters. It has a complete set of disciplines and distinctive features. It has 60 clinical, medical and technical departments and diagnostic platforms, including internal, external, women's, children's, etc., more than 2450 open beds, and more than 3940 employees, including more than 2840 medical staff. It is the only comprehensive hospital with perinatal and complete pediatrics subspecialty among the three level hospitals in the city, and the first batch of national demonstration bases for early childhood development.

In the 1950s, Xinhua Hospital has successfully performed the first open heart surgery for infants in China, and in the 1980s, it successfully performed the first separation of conjoined infants in China. In addition, the hospital has also took the lead in carrying out intracapsular cryosurgery for cataract extraction, radical surgery for congenital megacolon, and special decompression for congenital polycystic kidney. It is the first hospital that applied enzyme based agents to treat somatic jaundice, it also took the lead in carrying out the correction of kyphosis scoliosis in China, and took the lead in opening a pediatric asthma clinic. Xinhua Hospital has 12 national and Shanghai key disciplines or research bases, including Ministry of Education-Shanghai Key Laboratory of Children’s Environmental Health, Engineering Research Center of Techniques and Instruments for Diagnosis and Treatment of Congenital Heart Disease, Ministry of Education, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Pediatric Digestion and Nutrition, and Shanghai Institute of Pediatric Medicine. In recent years, it has won 20 scientific research awards above provincial and ministerial level; 144 talent projects at or above the municipal level, including the “National Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Talents Project”, “the Ministry of Education's New Century Talents”, “Shanghai's Leading Talents”, and “Shanghai's Outstanding Academic Leaders”; 324 national scientific research projects, 1431 SCI articles published. In 2015, Xinhua Hospital officially established a Clinical Research Center, which is the first hospital based clinical research systematic support and innovation platform institution in Shanghai. It has cooperated deeply with the University of Ottawa Medical School in Canada and Harvard Medical School in the United States, gathered doctors, clinical epidemiologists, clinical pharmacists and statisticians, followed international scientific level and ethical standards, and built a clinical research collaboration network. It promotes the quality improvement of clinical research projects, provides a standardized way for the transformation of clinical medical research achievements, and enriches the clinical research talent pool.
Supported by the Clinical Research Center and relying on the Institute of Early Life Health of Shanghai Jiao Tong University Medical College, the "Thousand Day Plan" - the first carrier level clinical research project in China to explore major human developmental diseases has made initial progress. The research achievements of this project in the field of early life health will strongly promote the scientific level of decision-making on maternal and child health and related policies in China to a new level.
According to the deployment of the "5+3+1" project of the new tertiary hospital in the suburbs of Shanghai, Xinhua Hospital has been fully responsible for the establishment of Chongming tertiary hospital since 2009, led the branch hospital to successfully pass the review of the tertiary hospital, and became the national pilot hospital for standardized diagnosis and treatment of tumors. The construction of the specialized medical consortium with the Xinhua Chongming branch hospital as the core has achieved results. The reform model of Xinhua Chongming integrated management and homogeneous development has been fully affirmed and highly praised by the National Health and Family Planning Commission. Since 2018, the Medical Reform Office of the State Council and the Shanghai Municipal Government have jointly entrusted Xinhua Hospital to take the lead in the construction of the "healthy version" of the pilot reform of the Xinhua Chongming regional medical consortium. Fengxian Hospital Area of Xinhua Hospital, a key planning project of the "Fourteenth Five Year Plan" under construction, covers an area of 152 mu, with 1200 beds in total. The first phase of the project covers an area of about 135000 square meters, with 600 beds. It will be completed in December 2024.
